Pilot-Officer Blackwood was the son of Francis Peter and Frances Mildred Blackwood, and husband of Brenda Blackwood, of Pedmore, Worcestershire.  He was born in New Zealand.

On Tuesday 2 June 1942 Pilot Officer Francis John Blackwood BEM (service number 46821) was flying for the Royal Air Force at just 28 years old.

His mission that day was a photo reconnaissance mission in a Supermarine Mk X Spitfire X. 4502 for No. 140 Squadron when he was shot down by flak on Alderney, he ditched into the sea off the Casquets lighthouse and was never seen again.
